Detox your Mattress: Pour Baking Soda on Your Bed with Essential Oils

It's spring and it's time to do some spring cleaning!  One life-hack I will show you today is freshening up your mattress by pouring baking powder on your bed.  Baking powder is a natural deodorizer and can help absorb any odors found on your mattress.

You will need:
  • Baking powder
  • Essential Oils (your preference)
  • Plastic food storage container with lid
  • Vacuum
  • Washer/Dryer Machine
  • Diatomaceous Earth (must be food grade) - purchase here

1. Prepare the baking powder mixture.  Grab your plastic food storage container with lid and essential oils.  Place baking powder in the container and add 10-20 drops of essential oil.  Place the lid back on and give it a good shake to mix it up.  Let this sit for about 15-20 minutes so the fragrance oil can be distributed in the baking powder before using.
  • Here is the mixture I used:
  • 7 drops of lavender
  • 7 drops of peppermint
  • 7 orange
2. Remove pillows, sheets, and mattress pad from the bed.  Wash and dry your sheets.
3. Use your upholstery attachment on your vacuum.  Vacuum the mattress from dust, dirt, and dust mites.  Make sure to thoroughly vacuum the sides and creases in the bed.
4. Spot clean any stains you may have on your bed.
5. Deodorize your mattress with the baking powder and essential oil mixture. Sprinkle it on your mattress, with gloves in a circular motion, you can work in the baking powder mixture. Let sit for 4-8 hours.
6. Vacuum the baking soda.
7. Sprinkle (lightly) Diatomaceous Earth (must be food grade).  This is a natural pesticide for bed bugs.  To learn more about that, read it hereNote: You are not going to heavily coat your mattress like you did with the baking powder mixture.
8. Place your sheets back on your bed and you're all set!
9. That's it! It is recommended to do the baking powder detox twice a year.  Feel free to vacuum the Diatomaceous Earth back up and sprinkle, when changing your sheets.  (Just in case there are bed bugs!)
